CETAC Information

CETAC is a group of doctors and healthcare professionals specializing in care related to the prevention of thrombosis (blood clotting) and the management of anticoagulation (blood thinners). Our team consists of doctors, nurses, pharmacist, research staff and support staff. Our centre provides a multitude of clinics for the management of all aspects related to thrombosis (blood clots) and anticoagulation (blood thinners).

Our “Anticoagulation Clinic”, sometimes referred to as “Warfarin (Coumadin) Clinic”, provides on-site monitoring, dose adjustment, risk assessment, and follow-up to patients taking Warfarin (Coumadin).

A similar service is provided to patients taking blood thinners that are called DOACs (direct oral anticoagulants) such as Dabigatran (Pradaxa), Rivaroxaban (Xarelto), Apixaban (Eliquis) or Edoxaban (Lixiana) during the “DOAC Clinic”.

Patients going for surgery or other invasive procedures will have dedicated one-on-one time with their doctor to go through step-by-step instructions on how to stop and restart their blood thinner in light of surgery.

Our “Thrombosis Clinic” provides care to patients who have been diagnosed with a deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and/or pulmonary embolism (PE), as well as other types of blood clots and those that may have an elevated risk of blood clots. Typically, the Thrombosis Clinic doctor will follow you and discuss why you may have developed a blood clot and make recommendations about how long you will be treated for and what types of measures to take to prevent future blood clots.

Additionally, for hospitalized patients or patients coming to the Emergency Department diagnosed with blood clots, taking blood thinners or at risk of blood clots, our doctors provide consultation services to ensure optimal care as well as post-discharge follow-up.

CETAC also has an active research program run by world-renowned researchers with experienced research assistants in the field of Thrombosis and Anticoagulation. Patients are able to actively participate in our studies and benefit from cutting edge, novel treatments that are developed within this program. Did you know that certain oral anticoagulants (blood thinners) don’t require regular blood tests and can be taken instead of warfarin (Coumadin) in patients with:

-Deep Vein Thrombosis or Pulmonary Embolism

-Atrial Fibrillation in patients who never had a  heart valve replacement

Did you know that there is an information video playing in CETAC about warfarin (Coumadin) that can also be viewed on this website?

Did you know that our Anticoagulation and Thrombosis clinic is now called CETAC ? It stands for  “Centre of Excellence in Thrombosis and Anticoagulation.”

Did you know that CETAC is heavily involved in research to advance the care and lifestyle of our patients? You can look on this website to see what studies we are doing and if you are a potential participant.
